How much does a round of the Munros Cost?

This is an interesting and scary question, and, of course, the answer will be different for everyone. There are some big variables, including:-

1. Where do you live and what transport will you use?

2. What kind of accommodation will you use?

3. What is your Food & Drink budget?

As an accountant and munroist I needed to know the answer, as you do, and my best starting point would be my own experience. I started around 1980 and completed in 1988, but it would be unfair to use historic costs ... as things were so much cheaper years ago. A more reliable answer would consider current prices.

My records showed that I, and two friends, had completed the Munros in 40 trips to Scotland (153 nights away), using a car, from Lancashire. So, I analysed the accommodation we had used. Next I calculated the approximate present day minimum cost of that accommodation and estimated food and fuel costs etc.

I came up with the following estimate of what it might cost if we did the Munros today, (2026).

So, first the accommodation:-

And then the food and drinks...

And then the other costs...

So, the grand total is...

I have assumed that everyone was fully kitted out with waterproofs, boots, crampons, Ice axes, torchs, SATNAVS, tents, midge nets, YHA membership and has not required services of a guide etc

There may be other factors to take into account. For example:-

  • If you left an empty house behind then there will/should be savings in Gas, Electricity and Water

  • As the food & alcohol you consume whilst away is included in the equation then you will again save on what you would have had at home.

Do your own calculation! Substitute your own figures to get a more accurate answer for yourself !! My own conclusion was that:-

A round could cost around £14,000 per head.

That's around £50 per Munro

Worth every penny!!

Really practical and useful. I'd be travelling a bit further and be with people who probably drink more than that!! 😜 But such a useful framework. Worth it like you say!!👍👍

Hi, I'm Munroist 604 and I love sharing Scottish mountaineering stories.

I'm Neville Wiseman and I completed the Munros in 1988. That wasn't enough, so I completed the Corbetts in 2000. And then the Donalds...

At the ripe old age of 86, I'm still collecting Scottish mountains from The Munro's Tables. It's mainly Grahams these days, but I last re-bagged a Munro at the age of 85. I'm probably the Oldest Munro Blogger !!

I'm continually adding to my two websites, www.scottishmunros.com and www.normalneville.com, with stories, maps, routes and tips for Munro Baggers... and aspiring Munro Baggers!

I've written a book called 'Diary of a Munroist- Come By the Hills' which you can access free of charge.

I also enjoy publishing various Blogs, Podcasts and ruminations around the topic, including articles I keep finding on my computer but that I had forgotten I'd written!
