This work of art features Gerry Howkins, founder of the first independent hostel and private bunkhouse in Scotland, affectionately known as Gerry's Hostel. The larger version of the artwork on the same page shows the foreground which features some of the quirks of Gerry such as his herbal remedies and flip flops. There are stories and songs about the Legend of Gerry who is part of munro bagging folklore with his remote hostel between Achnashellach and Achnasheen
Click the image for a song and video about The Legend of Gerry's Hostel- or if you're viewing on a computer look at a bigger view of the picture below to find clues about his Legend! 🤣🤣

I've already written a blog about memories of Gerry's Hostel and also had an article published in this month's The Munro Society Magazine about him. But now I've also had a go at writing him into Scottish Munro Bagging Folklore through the medium of a song with video- The Legend of Gerry's Hostel.

Mountaineering Forums are divided like marmite on Gerry- some people loved him, many didn't. But everyone agrees that he and his hostel were characterful experiences that formed the heart of Munro Bagging stories for so many people. He set up the first Independent Hostel in Scotland.

I was both his friend and his accountant and the video for the song includes real footage of Gerry, including some interesting dancing and animal impressions! He saw this footage in his lifetime and it made him laugh.

If it makes you laugh and you agree Gerry should go down in Scottish Munro Bagging Folklore as a Legend, please give a 'thumbs up' Like to the video on YouTube and even better 'share' it or subscribe to my YouTube channel for more Munro Bagging stories, podcasts and songs. The image below should show more items in the foreground to give you some clues as to why he has become a Legend! Hope that you enjoy The Legend of Gerry's Hostel.

This artwork covers some of the quirks of Gerry Howkins who established the first Independent Scottish Hostel and bunkhouse- Gery's Hostel. In addition to some of the nearby Munros and his munro book there are three signs, his bottle candle holders, herbal remedies, 50 pence pices for fines, herbal remedies, one of his flip flops, a Lidl bag and some of his vinyl collection. Oh and one of the pine martens from his shed and rhododendrons from his garden.

Hi, I'm Munroist 604 and I love sharing Scottish mountaineering stories.

I'm Neville Wiseman and I completed the Munros in 1988. That wasn't enough, so I completed the Corbetts in 2000. And then the Donalds...

At the ripe old age of 86, I'm still collecting Scottish mountains from The Munro's Tables. It's mainly Grahams these days, but I last re-bagged a Munro at the age of 85. I'm probably the Oldest Munro Blogger !!

I'm continually adding to my two websites, www.scottishmunros.com and www.normalneville.com, with stories, maps, routes and tips for Munro Baggers... and aspiring Munro Baggers!

I've written a book called 'Diary of a Munroist- Come By the Hills' which you can access free of charge.

I also enjoy publishing various Blogs, Podcasts and ruminations around the topic, including articles I keep finding on my computer but that I had forgotten I'd written!

If you enjoy this site please give my articles a 'like' and a comment... and I will keep posting!
